The Loyalists and The Economists
Last week, the branding of our Ex-President, Goodluck Jonathan as an ineffectual Buffon by UK based Magazine, The Economist has drawn criticism from almost every individual that made up the Nigerian online community.
They said this while gritting their teeth
"The nerve of those white people to write scathing and demeaning remarks about our Ex President while eating crumpets and drinking beer."
And this
"They also called him a Buffon, also in the family of the monkey. That is racist right? White people are so racist!!"
And this
"They should be sued till they go bankrupt for such undiplomatic use of language and thought."
Let us not forget this
"In this world where racism is such a dicey topic, blunt thoughts about African leaders shouldn't be aired, even if the Leader is obviously corrupt to the bone, voicing such an opinion might pass the wrong message."
It was quite strange that the complainers were not only PDP loyalists. This apparent reaction seemed to be out of patriotism and loyalty rather than out of blind support and denial. It is like when Sade complained about how her boyfriend could not perform well to Bisi's hearing. And then Bisi bringing it up in a new light because she wanted to make a point about something. I mean, it is obvious that the boyfriend can't perform but Bisi has no right to bring it up and the unsatisfied Sade now has to defend her boyfriend no matter what......because,loyalty and.... Boyfriends are expensive in the market, even the impotent ones.
This new dynamic actually shed a new light on Nigerians who were formerly known as the suffering and smiling bunch, raking up the award for the happiest country a few years ago(I wonder if a prize money came with that award..... I got nothing). Though, we are no longer the happiest but with the Economist outrage, I think we rank as the most loyal country in the world.
Our President can commit war crimes and divert money to fund his campaign for another four years in office but we will never allow anybody that is notblack, Nigerian to talk ill of him. But after all is said and done. Was the phrase "ineffectual Buffon" apt in describing our Ex President?
Political Columnist, Kayode Ogundamisi, threw a question asking Nigerians to describe Goodluck Jonathan and these were some of the answers he got.
"He was a clueless and directionless fellow devoid of ideas.@ogundamisi: How would you best describe Former Nigerian President @GEJonathan" by @waleconcord
"@ogundamisi: How would you best describe Former Nigerian President @GEJonathan"wicked, callous, insensitive, dumb, dunce, unpatriotic, misfit" @Katchili
"Careless,Ineffectual, wasteful, reckless,Divisive and Weak RT @ogundamisi: How would you best describe Former Nigerian President" @mysterlawk
So what do I think of Ex President Goodluck Jonathan?
I think he was an ineffectual buffon(see what I did there?) Who lacked every quality necessary for a leader. I also think he was a puppet who lacked empathy and the people of Nigeria would have literally voted in a monkey to keep him out of Aso Rock. (I am a Nigerian.... So I expect no backlash)
But this is just an opinion, right?
Have a great week!
